Visitor guide
Know Before You Go
Prepare for your visit to Cameroon with the essentials for entry, health, local travel and business appointments.
Check current security advice before planning your route
Risks and restrictions vary by region, including parts of the Northwest, Southwest, Far North and border areas. Check your government’s current advisory before booking and before departure; this guide is not a route-specific safety assessment.
Your pre-travel checklist
Before you travel · 01
Passport & visa
Check requirements for your nationality and entry route with the responsible Cameroonian mission. Plan for at least six months of passport validity after arrival and confirm the exact rule for your passport. Use the official e-visa portal; land and sea entry may require a physical visa arranged in advance.
Before you travel · 02
Health & yellow fever
A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is generally required for entry (WHO lists travellers aged one year and older). Consult a travel-health clinic about current requirements, exceptions, malaria prevention and routine vaccines. Carry suitable travel and medical evacuation insurance.
Before you travel · 03
Arrival documents
Keep your passport, visa authorisation, vaccination certificate, accommodation details and relevant invitation or onward-travel information accessible. Confirm the required documents with your airline and the authorities before departure.
Before you travel · 04
Money & payments
Cameroon uses the Central African CFA franc (XAF), not the West African CFA franc (XOF). Confirm payment options with hotels and suppliers; cards may not be accepted everywhere. Exchange money through authorised providers and use ATMs cautiously.
Before you travel · 05
Language & local etiquette
French and English are official languages, but usage differs by location. Arrange interpretation for important meetings if needed. Greet hosts respectfully and ask permission before photographing people; avoid photographing sensitive official or military sites.
Before you travel · 06
Time, weather & packing
Cameroon uses UTC+1. Coastal cities are hot and humid, while highland areas can be cooler; rainfall varies by region and season. Check your destination’s forecast and pack suitable clothing, insect repellent and copies of essential documents.
Before you travel · 07
Transport & airport pickup
Confirm your arrival airport, flight number, driver details and meeting point before travelling. Arrange trusted transport and review your route with local contacts. Avoid unnecessary night road journeys and allow extra time for traffic and checkpoints.
Before you travel · 08
Business visits
Confirm invitations, appointment times and the correct visa category for your activities. Business visits do not automatically authorise employment. Carry relevant company documents and agree your itinerary and local representation needs in advance.
Check the official sources
Requirements depend on nationality, age and itinerary and can change. Confirm with the authorities, your airline and a travel-health professional. Visa approval is not guaranteed.
